Denim jackets have seen quite an evolution since they launched in the early 1900s. First designed by Levi Strauss – a name still synonymous with denim today – as a hardy piece of outerwear for real-life cowboys, they have been worn by everyone from punks to pop stars in the century since. But how are people styling them now? Let’s delve into the modern world of denim.

How to wear a denim jacket

When it comes to knowing what to wear with a denim jacket, the options are almost limitless. But that endless versatility can make it feel a little overwhelming, too. The good news? It’s actually incredibly easy to create a variety of outfits with denim jackets. Here are a few ways to make yours a staple year-round.

The cool classics

When the weather warms up, slipping a streamlined, well-fitted denim jacket over a classic white T-shirt is a grab-and-go classic. Contrasting a boxy jacket against softer layers is an ideal alternative. Think patterned midi dresses and pleated skirts for city breaks or brunch in sunnier months. You can also swap out the tee for chunky knits when the weather gets cooler.

Colour it in

Denim doesn’t always have to be blue. In fact, thanks to the recent rise in dopamine dressing, there’s never been a better time to invest in bright colours. If you’re new to the world of colourful denim, start with pastel hues for spring. If you’re feeling a little bolder, double an acid-bright jacket with jeans in a matching hue.

Office-ready denim

Thankfully, the days of denim being unwelcome at the office are well and truly behind us. Plus, there are lots of smart ways to wear denim jackets. Our personal preference? Pulling on a slouchy, softly structured jacket with an oversized shirt and jeans. Otherwise, try throwing it on over high-rise, wide-leg tailored trousers for a look that’s equally suited to work or the weekend. In spring, we’re slipping sandals on underneath. When the temperature drops, swap them out for heeled boots.

Denim does eveningwear

Heading out for the night? Don’t leave your denim behind. There are plenty of ways to dress it up for date night or drinks with friends. Veer away from raw-edged or distressed styles and opt for something in a darker shade to wear over a colourful slip dress. That’ll create a throwback 90s look. Alternatively, pairing denim with another classic material such as leather will keep things sleek. Opt for a midi skirt or straight-leg trousers for a more tailored style.

The Canadian tuxedo

Double denim may have been off our radars (and the runways) for a few years, but it’s well and truly back now. We’re no longer talking about slinging a denim jacket on top of your favourite jeans, though – although that works, too. Modern versions have gone a step further, with triple and even quadruple denim. How to wear it? Try half-tucking a denim shirt into a high-rise denim mini, and throw a cropped denim jacket on top. Whatever you wear, it’s important to keep the shades complementary.
