ORGANIC

The pesticides and insecticides used on many cotton farms cause life-threatening poisoning among workers and wildlife. But there is another option. 

What you can do
Choose items made from organic cotton, which prohibits the use of all those harmful chemicals, making cotton production healthier and more sustainable. Also, look out for brands that have signed up to the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world, working with partners to implement better cotton farming standards globally.

You can help further reduce chemical pollution by opting for an eco-friendly washing detergent that breaks down naturally.

SAVING WATER

Around 783 million people have no access to clean drinking water, yet an average pair of jeans is created with enough water to sustain a family of four for a month. Is there a better way to create our trusty blues?

What you can do
Invest in denim brands that use innovative new wash and finishing methods and help turn the tide on wasteful water consumption and water pollution. You can also make a pledge to wash your denim every 10 wears or more, helping to save even more water.

Did you know?
It can take up to 4,000 litres of water to produce the average pair of jeans – that’s enough water to fill 50 average-sized bath tubs.

BRIGHT NEW THINGS

Our Bright New Things initiative champions designers who place sustainable innovation at the heart of what they do. Each season, we’ll introduce at least four new labels to our Bright New Things network, so now you can keep up with current trends while keeping your conscience clean.

BRITISH MAKERS

From its heyday, the British textile industry has faced a steep decline, meaning a loss of traditional skills and jobs. Wool fleeces now command such a low price that some farmers resort to burning or burying them. So how can we create a brighter future for British textiles?

What you can do

Support the British manufacturing industry by buying items made in the UK or items made from British materials. By doing so, you’re investing in the future of British skills and communities.

As one of the first department stores to ban the sale of fur in 2005, we are committed to phasing out the sale of exotic skins by February 2020. This marks a continuation of our longstanding commitment to place ethics and sustainability at the heart of everything we do. From this time, we will only sell leather goods from agricultural livestock.

SEDEX

Early in 2014, we became members of SEDEX (the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, if you were wondering), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving transparency and visibility in global supply chains.

Membership of SEDEX helps us work together with our suppliers to create a culture of transparency across our supply chain and to inform our buying decisions.

POSITIVE LUXURY

We also work with Positive Luxury, a platform for positive living, whose butterfly logo can be found on product pages for brands that are following a wide range of sustainable and anti-cruelty practices. You can find out more about their story here

Working with our partners

Our commitment to ethical trade is underpinned by Selfridges’ Ethical Trading Requirements which are legal requirements within the terms and conditions of doing business with us.

We want to ensure that products sold by Selfridges are produced under humane working conditions and with respect for workers and their human rights, that animals are treated and transported humanely and that suppliers minimise their impact on the environment.

We believe in using our voice to engage our brand partners in an active dialogue about key environmental issues. Project Ocean advocates for life under water and highlights the urgent need to tackle plastic pollution. Forests will be our major focus for 2020 and beyond, celebrating ecosystems that are vital to the health of our planet. Read more about our position on forest-related materials here.
