Selfridges Loves:

how to get your wardrobe fit for the new year

After days of living in loungewear, forgetting what day of the week it is and eating entire wheels of brie (no, just us?), it’s time to get our heads – and wardrobes – back into the new-year mindset. From the designers set to own 2018 to the new bag label about to burst onto your Instagram feed, here are our top ways to get your style in shape this January. Now, step away from the cheeseboard…

Logo love

How did Balenciaga become the world’s most sought-after fashion label? Is it Demna Gvasalia’s pointy second-skin boots, his normcore approach to advertising or his unwavering street-couture aesthetic? Probably all of the above, but more than anything it’s the brand’s new logo – unveiled in September 2017 and inspired by ‘the clarity of public transportation signage’. After being plastered across hoodies, scarves, bags and more, the minimalist new design has whipped the fashion world into a Balenciaga frenzy that we can’t see subsiding anytime soon. 2018: watch this Balenciaga-shaped space.

Ganni's zesty mohair jumpers, tongue-in-cheek tees and perfectly considered dresses (more than a midi, less than the maxi – aka the holy grail of dress lengths), will give your wardrobe a hefty dollop of cool and a dusting of fun for 2018.

Girl power

The latest addition to our roster of brands, L’Orla – co-founded by designer by Orla Kiely and in-demand stylist Leith Clark (who has dressed Alexa Chung and Keira Knightley) – is exclusive to Selfridges in the UK. This season, the blush-pink corduroy, floor-sweeping floral dresses and retro prints are inspired by feminist icons of the Sixties and Seventies, including Yoko Ono, Marianne Faithfull and Frida Kahlo. “This year, and this current world climate, is about coming together, about women supporting each other,” Kiely told Women’s Wear Daily.“ Hopefully, it allows women to celebrate their femininity and feel strength from that. I think it is really needed right now.” Hear, hear.

Leg room

Let’s face it: very few of us feel particularly ‘skinny’ come January, which is why it’s music to our ears that it’s all about the wide leg in denim right now. Even J Brand, the original purveyors of super-skinny jeans, has brought us ‘Joan’ – the ultimate everyday wide-leg style with a flattering high-waisted fit. Play up the Seventies styling with a pussy-bow blouse and chunky mules.

Little luxuries

New British label Yuzefi creates small (but perfectly formed) bags that are instantly recognisable by their unique design; elements that are normally hidden inside the bag – such as the bolt hardware and structured leather panels – are exposed for all to see. On the bags’ diminutive size, the brand’s founder Nasa Yousefi told British Vogue: “I am a fan of owning less and carrying less; we spend our lives being weighed down by things we don’t need. I noticed that the less I carried, the more open I was to doing and experiencing.” That sounds like a New Year’s Resolution, if ever we heard one.

Out of this world

The quirky appeal of a one-off vintage frock meets a flattering, feminine fit in the form of RIXO – the fast-rising London label, designed by two former fashion buyers and best friends, that’s being lauded for its wardrobe-enhancing, affordable printed dresses. The celestial prints and space-age florals (inspired by original NASA posters) have caught our eye as some of the most standout styles of the season.

Cult sensation

It was difficult to miss Cult Gaia’s explosive entrance onto the fashion scene last summer, as the Ark bag (which looks a bit like a chic half-moon-shaped picnic basket) was ‘grammed by everyone from Insta-influencer Camille Charrière to Beyoncé. Now, the Los Angeles-based label is back with more icon-in-the-making accessories, including the Ark bag in a whole range of irresistible colours – the perfect companion for a season full of weddings, summer sojourns and picnics in the park.

Copenhagen cool

With a notable rise in international buyers and street-style fanfare at Copenhagen Fashion Week last year, it’s clear that Danish fashion – in particular the laid-back, playful style for which the capital city has become known – is attracting a global following. Leading the charge is Ganni, whose zesty mohair jumpers, tongue-in-cheek tees and perfectly considered dresses (more than a midi, less than the maxi – aka the holy grail of dress lengths), will give your wardrobe a hefty dollop of cool and a dusting of fun for 2018.
